Preseason Predictions

The Season is right around the corner, and while we still hold the excitement from the ending of the spectacular championship game in 2016, the 2016-2017 season will begin with a bang. Without a doubt there will be plenty of excitement throughout the season beginning day 1 and concluding with the crowning of a National Champion. So to get the season started here are my picks for conference champions, the predicted bracket and outcome of the entire tournament.

American Athletic Conference:

Auto Bid: Connecticut

At-Large Bid(s):Cincinnati, SMU

This should be an exciting league race to watch between UConn and Cincinnati. Both teams look primed to take the crown. The question is who will protect their home court and who will make the fewest mistakes against the lesser teams in their conference.

Auto Bid: Duke

At-Large Bid(s): North Carolina, Virginia, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Florida State

With the talent on the Duke roster they should be able to run away with this one. Coach K should have no problem getting his freshmen and veterans to play well together which makes the ACC theirs for the taking. UNC and Virginia will put up a fight but don’t quite have the fire power to contend.

Auto Bid: Dayton

At-Large Bid(s): Rhode Island, VCU

Another great race for a conference title should be taking place. The consistency of Dayton puts them atop of the group. Rhode Island struggled with injuries last season when they were primed to make a push onto the national scene, with E.C. Matthews back in action the Rams looks to make that happen this year. VCU always puts out one of the most athletic teams every year, will see if that can get them an A-10 title or mot.

Auto Bid: North Florida

At-Large Bid(s): None

This is North Florida’s title to have or give away. If anyone is going to challenge it will be Florida Gulf Coast.

Big 12:

Auto Bid: Kansas

At-Large Bid(s): Iowa State, Texas, Baylor, West Virginia, Oklahoma

The Big 12 has loaded up with talented coaches and in a year or two should be the cream of the crop, but this year it seems to be a little down from the previous years. Kansas looks to make it 13 consecutive titles and should be able to do so with the dwindling of the rest of the pack.

Big East:

Auto Bid: Villanova

At-Large Bid(s): Xavier, Creighton, Seton Hall, Marquette, Butler

Another title for Villanova is right there for the taking. The Defending National Champs look to defend the Big East first before defending their National crown. With the fire power to win another National Championship the Big East is theirs. Xavier looked like they may be able to put up a fight, but with recent events of Myles Davis it may not have enough.

Big Sky:

Auto Bid: Weber State

At-Large Bid(s): None

It will be tough for Weber State. Montana and Idaho will put up a fight for the title, but in the end Weber State should take care of business.

Big South:

Auto Bid: Winthrop

At-Large Bid(s): None

With the other normal title contenders entering rebuilding seasons, Winthrop should have no problem defending their title.

Big Ten:

Auto Bid: Wisconsin

At-Large Bid(s): Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State

The Big Ten as always will turn into a fight and who knows who will come out on top. Wisconsin has a lot of fire power from a team returning from a Sweet 16 visit. If they can start the season stronger this year and continue their momentum from playing themselves into the NCAA tournament in 2016, they have as best a chance as anyone. Indiana won’t go down quietly if they can find that replacement for Yogi Ferrell and Michigan State lost a lot but reloaded with some very talented freshmen who could help make a push. This will be an exciting race to watch as always.

Big West:

Auto Bid: Long Beach State

At-Large Bid(s): None

UC Irvine won’t go away easily, but Long Beach State should take the crown in this race.

Auto Bid: UNC Wilmington

At-Large Bid(s): None

This will be a good mid-major race to watch throughout the season. UNC Wilmington will be the front-runner followed by Towson, William & Mary, College of Charleston, and Hofstra all wanting to take the crown. The team who can protect their home court and sneak out some tough road victories will ultimately decide the Champion.

Conference USA:

Auto Bid: UAB

At-Large Bid(s):None

Middle Tennessee will hope to take their big win against Michigan State last year to help them to start the season but UAB should be able to make the conference remember that they are the best team.

Horizon League:

Auto Bid: Valparaiso

At-Large Bid(s): None

With Coach Drew gone Valparaiso will be in unfamiliar territory, but with the talented roster and Alec Peters returning they should be just fine to defend their title.

Ivy League:

Auto Bid: Princeton

At-Large Bid(s): None

Princeton, Harvard, and Yale will be in another tough battle for the coveted Ivy crown. However, with the roster Princeton has they should be able to fight off any team hoping for the Ivy title.

Auto Bid: Monmouth

At-Large Bid(s): None

Monmouth has returned most of their program that led them to MAAC title and possible snub for a bid last year. This year powerhouse Iona looks to be down so Monmouth should be just as exciting to watch this year, bench and all.

Auto Bid: South Carolina State

At-Large Bid(s): None

It will be a fight for the Bulldogs. Howard and Hampton both look primed for a conference title. Time will only tell who can get the job done.

Auto Bid: Akron

At-Large Bid(s): None

One of the Mid-major powerhouses, the conference looks to be one of the best races in the country. Akron just holds a slight lead over Buffalo, Ohio, Kent State, and Eastern Michigan. While Akron may win the regular season title there is no guarantee that they can win the conference tournament to return to the NCAA’s.

Missouri Valley:

Auto Bid: Wichita State

At-Large Bid(s): None

It’s Wichita State’s to win and theirs to lose. Northern Iowa may put up a fight, but I wouldn’t be surprised with another undefeated regular season for the Shockers.

Mountain West:

Auto Bid: San Diego State

At-Large Bid(s): None

This could be another year where the Mountain West finds itself a one bid league. San Diego State has the head start and if any other team wants to buy for the title it would be New Mexico.

Auto Bid: LIU Brooklyn

At-Large Bid(s): None

LIU Brooklyn won’t have an easy go about it but I believe they will come out on top of a three team race between them, Fairleigh Dickinson , and Wagner.

Ohio Valley:

Auto Bid: Belmont

At-Large Bid(s): None

Belmont should repeat as the conference champs but it won’t be easy as other teams have built stronger rosters this year to compete for a league crown.

Auto Bid: Oregon

At-Large Bid(s): Arizona, UCLA, California, Colorado

They may not be as deep as last year but the Pac-12 looks to be more solid. Oregon is returning most of their team from a team that made it to the Elite 8 last year and should ave no problem winning the Pac-12 outright again. Arizona will put up a fight but they just don’t seem to have enough to get the job done. The Pac-12 should make some noise come March.

Patriot League:

Auto Bid: Lehigh

At-Large Bid(s): None

Bucnkell ad Boston will do what they can to take on Lehigh but should be able to hold them off to earn their first Patriot League title since 2012.

Auto Bid: Kentucky

At-Large Bid(s): Texas A&M, Florida, Georgia

Another down year for the SEC. Kentucky really doesn’t even seem to have a challenge. Texas A&M will use their strengths to make a push for the title but with Kentucky’s experience and talent they should claim another SEC.

Auto Bid: Chattanooga

At-Large Bid(s): None

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Chattanooga receive and At-Large Bid if they happen to fall in their conference tournament. Four starters return from a 29 win team last year and they are much more experienced to get the job done again.

Auto Bid: Stephen F. Austin

At-Large Bid(s): None

Brad Underwood may be gone but his talent is still there. SFA should have no problem running the table again to win the Southland.

Summit League:

Auto Bid: IPFW

At-Large Bid(s): None

South Dakota State, and North Dakota State will give them a challenge but Fort Wayne should be able to win the title this year.

Sun Belt:

Auto Bid: Little Rock

At-Large Bid(s): None

Little Rock has enough star power from their 30 win season a year ago even without coach Chris Beard. It could be tough but as the season progresses they should come into their own to win the title.

Auto Bid: Texas Southern

At-Large Bid(s): None

Texas Southern has become a consistent title contender in the SWAC and looks to get the job done again this year.

Auto Bid: New Mexico State

At-Large Bid(s): None

It won’t be easy for New Mexico State. As they usually find themselves in the position to win the WAC, the other teams are coming into their own this year and could bring New Mexico State down.

Auto Bid: Gonzaga

At-Large Bid(s): Saint Mary’s, BYU

The WCC has two solid teams again. Saint Mary’s returns most of their roster from last year and Gonzaga has reloaded with a boat load of talent. Both teams should make the tournament and will have a great battle to win the WCC outright this year after sharing the title last year.
